Preamble: Second Life ?
I tried Second Life to see the photos by Chris Marker in the Ouvroir simulation.
What made me stay ?
Could it be the short distance between an idea and a “prim” (Second Life building blocks) ?
Or finding a place where the expression “De fil en anguille” (One thing leading to another but some texture is lost in the translation) turned animal would roam freely ?
Pull a string, throw a net and catch dices where you draw on the empty faces ?
The random/shuffle button is probably the greatest invention to survive in a world where you receive in one week as much information as someone living during the 18th century had in a lifetime.
When this button is not present I will somehow try to invent it.
This is called building and/or teleport in Second Life.
“Not REAL!” is what I sometimes hear when I say I am playing Second Life.
To which I would answer: as real as all the tools/objects humanity made.
I don’t, but if you feel the urge to define “Real” simply go and talk to a tree. As Frank Lloyd Wright said “I believe in God, only I spell it Nature.”
Your inventions/your avatar’s appearance can easily be the meeting point between two persons who will never “see” each other. Could this be a more direct connection between our brains while skipping the “how is the weather?” clothing people tend to use in “First Life” ?
Of course this playing will change nothing to fact that there is a weapons factory not far from my home and or that we are destroying the world. If only more people would not take themselves too seriously and just play.
“Someday my Cow will Come” [first project]
I once found a catapult on the “Marketplace” and dropped inside the first object I found in my inventory: a “freebie” cow > video here.
Could this projectile while flying in a pixel Sky invent some temporary architectures in your mind ?
Playing Lego on your own is fun but sometimes you want to use those Legos the neighbour invented and/or admire the way he/she uses the same Legos as you.
I therefore asked some of my Second Life friends to invent some projectiles.
Playing with others
When you get tired of playing by yourself you can invite others to invent with you.
Some examples in the following projects: “Moving Islands“, “The Plant” and “Gravity is a Mistake“.
“…we want virtual unreality” [an antidote ?]
[…] “we now have 3D and the apologists say it is more realer than real. Do we need that ? Shouldn’t we be putting our energies into something more worthwhile? The human imagination is surely the most amazing thing in the universe. We do not want virtual reality we want virtual unreality. We cannot replicate reality – why are we wasting our time trying?”
